South Australian Museum, Junior Photographer’s workshop.

From Seniors to Juniors!

This year I have run two workshops for the SA Museum during the school holidays for 5-12 year olds, teaching them how to use a phone camera. The sessions allow for ten children to join me in the Discovery Centre at the SA Museum, to play with objects and take pictures of these treasures. Each attendee is tasked to submit their favourite from the session, and we return a fine art print of that as a gift to each attendee.

Let’s face it, people love taking photos with their phone camera, they really are ideal cameras considering they are with us all the time. The objective is to teach these seven principals:

  1. Know your camera

  2. Protect and clean the lens.

  3. The light must fall on your subject, don’t believe your eyes!

  4. Make it simple, photograph just what’s important.

  5. Engage with the subject, think, talk, retake.

  6. Review the pictures.

  7. Choose the best, ‘favourite‘ important ones.

It’s always a lovely experience, one of the favourites of my year.
